The Challenge for Exporters
Simply Barcodes understands the unique challenges facing exporters. What is an EAN code?
EAN stands for European Article Number. The EAN codes look similar to UPC codes except that EAN codes are 13 digits long.

Retail products outside of North America feature a single standard EAN barcode. The exceptions to this rule are: books, magazines, greeting cards, and prescription drugs. Retail products sold within North America feature a UPC barcode.

How do EAN codes work?
In short, the EAN is a 13-digit unique code for your product represented by scannable bars.

EAN codes (also known as GTIN-13) appear as lines (bars) of varying widths representing the series of numbers commonly shown below the bars.

Barcode scanners read the bars and convert them back to the 13-digit EAN number that they represent.

When you reach an agreement with a retailer to carry your product(s), they request the information required by their unique proprietary sales and inventory tracking systems.

Your 13-digit EAN number, when looked up within the retailer’s inventory system, finds the corresponding product name and price.

This information helps the retailer keep accurate inventory data, review sales, and reorder.

I export goods to companies outside of North America. Do I need an EAN code?
In the past, we explained that the UPC code is 12 digits long and can be read both by UPC and by EAN scanners since the EAN system is set to accept UP TO 13 digits, making the UPC ideal for worldwide product roll-out since they can be read universally.

After receiving an increasing number of reports that retailers in Europe and Asia are requesting EAN barcodes, we now suggest that you use an EAN code on exported goods.

I export goods to companies outside of North America. Do I need an EAN code?
We recommend that you use UPC codes. As of Jan 2005, all American retailers were scheduled to adjust their systems to be able to read the additional 13th digit in EAN barcodes. However, we cannot confirm that all retailers have complied with this changeover. Therefore, we recommend using UPC instead of EAN barcodes for the North American market to ensure universal compatibility. Click here to buy official UPC Codes.

Do I really need an EAN code on my product?
Most stores have electronic point of sale (ePOS) systems that enable them to keep track of their sales and stocks and to reorder products by scanning the barcode.

Most retailers refuse to accept products that are not barcoded. In addition, many distributors make use of barcodes in their warehouse systems.

What do I need to know about the standards organization for EAN codes?
GS1 formerly called EAN International and the UCC (Uniform Code Council), manages EAN code standards.
EAN codes can be obtained in two ways:
       1. Leased directly from GS1 for a considerable initial fee plus ongoing annual fees
       2. Purchased for a one-time fee from Simply Barcodes

In what format are my EAN codes created?
For your convenience, you receive your EAN barcode graphic in three different formats so that your graphic artist, printing company, or manufacturing facility can work with the graphic in their preferred software.

EPS Format - This layered, vector EPS file, generated in Adobe Illustrator, is the preferred format of most graphic designers due to its quality and versatility, particularly for resizing. EPS is an "exchange" format, not necessarily associated with one specific graphics program. An exchange format is one intended for multiple applications to be able to open.
TIFF Format - This layered TIFF file, created in Adobe Photoshop, works well for graphic artists who prefer to work in Photoshop and need a transparent background. This format is not suitable for significant resizing.
JPEG Format - This uncompressed, high-quality JPEG file, created in Adobe Photoshop, is the most common file format. However, it is not suitable for significant resizing.
