What is a Master Carton Code?
A Master Carton Code, a 14-digit barcode placed on the outside of your shipping carton or pallet, allows your retailer to scan your shipment of multiple units of your product as it comes into their warehouse.

Used in most retail situations, a Master Carton Code may also be referred to as an SCC-14, GTIN-14, ITF-14, or Shipping Container Code. All these terms describe the same 14-digit barcode which is created in the Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF) symbology.

How are Barcodes for Master Cartons different?
The SCC-14 is used to CHECK IN your shipments of multiple units of your product at the retailer’s warehouse. The EAN barcode is a 13-digit unique code for your product that allows retailers to CHECK OUT your individual units of product at the register.

Let’s consider a can of peas as an example:

This image shows the EAN code printed
on the individual unit of a can of peas.
This image shows the SCC-14 code printed on the Master Carton in which the manufacturer ships 12 cans of green peas to the retailer.

Do I really need a Master Carton Code (SCC-14)?
Yes, the common method by which your retailer scans your product shipments into inventory is the SCC-14 or Master Carton Code. Additionally, distributors use them to scan receipt of shipments.

How do Barcodes for Master Carton work?
Master Carton Codes (also known as SCC-14) appear as lines (bars) of varying widths representing the series of numbers commonly shown below the bars.

Barcode scanners read the bars and convert them back to the 14-digit Master Carton Code that they represent.

When you reach an agreement with a retailer to carry your product(s), they request the information required by their unique proprietary sales and inventory tracking systems.

Your 14-digit Master Carton Code, when scanned identifies the container of goods with your company.

What if I have multiple items with different EAN codes within one box?
Let’s assume that you pack 10 units of item A and 10 units of item B into a master carton. This is referred to as a Mixed Master Carton. Often this comes in the form of a mixed carton or mixed palette. Mixed Master Cartons are a special case. They require a specific starting digit (called a package level indicator) and require their own unique base EAN code. You MAY NOT use the EAN from an actual item inside of the box as the base for the master carton code for a mixed master carton. If you are unclear about this requirement, please call us at +1-404-869-0701 for further explanation.

EPS Format - This layered, vector EPS file is the preferred format of most graphic designers due to its quality and versatility, particularly for resizing. EPS is an "exchange" format, not necessarily associated with one specific graphics program. An exchange format is one intended for multiple applications to be able to open.
PNG Format - This raster PNG file works well for graphic artists who need a transparent background. This format supports lossless data compression. However, this format is not suitable for significant resizing.
JPEG Format - This uncompressed, high-quality JPEG file is the most common file format. All computers can open a JPEG. However, it is not suitable for resizing.
